Labette Health Welcomes New Orthopedic Surgeon— Welcoming Dr. Brandon Morris, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
Labette Health is pleased to welcome orthopedic surgeon, Brandon Morris, M.D., to its medical staff. Dr. Morris joins the Southeast Kansas Orthopedic Clinic team of Brad Meister, MD; Kevin Mosier, MD; Pat Webster, PA - C; and John Taber, PA - C. “We have looked for a long time to find the right physician to join our clinic and are very pleased to be bringing Dr. Morris to Southeast Kansas Orthopedic Clinic,” said Dr. Meister. “His talents will be a big asset to the care of orthopedic patients in Southeast Kansas for years to come.” Dr. Morris, a native of Fort Collins, CO, graduated with honors from Dartmouth College, obtained his medical degree at University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2013 and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Dr. Morris then elected to pursue two additional years of specialized surgical training, spending one year completing an orthopedic foot and ankle surgery fellowship at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Morris completed his fellowship train- ing in orthopedic sports medicine at University of Kansas Health System, where he gained extensive exposure in caring for athletes of all levels, including Kanas City area high schools, University of Kansas Athletics, the Kansas City Royals, and the Kansas City Chiefs. “Having grown up on a small farm and participated in 4 - H as a youth, I welcome the opportunity to return to my rural roots and serve the communities of Southeast Kansas and am excited to join the medical staff at Labette Health,” said Dr. Morris. “I look forward to adding my expertise in sports medicine and foot and ankle surgery to the orthopedic center of excellence that exists at Labette Health and Southeast Kansas Orthopedic Clinic. My training has focused on the treatment of orthopedic conditions involving the shoulder, hip, and knee, as well as the foot and ankle.”
The orthopedic team is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system - specializing in joint replacement, trauma and sports medicine. “The demand for orthopedic specialty care is rising,” said Kerry Volmer, RN, Joint Care Coordinator. “It’s rewarding for us to be able to fulfill that need for individualized care close to home by continuing to have premier orthopedic surgeons at Labette Health.” Labette Health is ranked among the Top 100 Hospitals in the Nation for Joint Replacement and Top 10% in the Nation for Major Orthopedic Surgery according to CareChex, a national rating system. Labette Health is also designated a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee & Hip Replacement and nationally recognized by Healthgrades for Total Knee Replacement. “Dr. Morris is very personable and well trained,” said Dr. Mosier. “I have no doubt that he will be a 5 - star orthopedic surgeon for Southeast Kansas.”
Dr. Morris is now seeing patients at Southeast Kansas Orthopedic Clinic located in Bldg D at Labette Health. Patients can contact the clinic at 620 - 421 - 0881. “Whether breaking tackles or bucking hay bales, I look forward to helping patients move on from injury to enjoy the activities they love,” said Morris.
TAKE TIME TO GET A FLU VACCINE. • CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu and it’s potentially serious complications. • While there are many different flu viruses, flu vaccines protect against the viruses that research suggests will be most common. • Flu vaccination has been shown to: Reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, and missed work and school due to flu. Reduce the risk of flu - associated hospitalization for children, working age adults, and older adults. Prevent serious medical events associated with some chronic conditions. Protect women during and after pregnancy and protect their babies from flu after birth for several months. Be lifesaving in children. • Flu vaccination has been shown in several studies to reduce severity of illness in people who get vaccinated but still get sick. • Getting vaccinated may also protect people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain health conditions. • Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine annually by the end of October. • Try to avoid close contact with sick people. • If you are sick with flu symptoms, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever reducing medicine. • While sick, limit your contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If not available, use alcohol - based hand rub. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like flu. TAKE FLU ANTIVIRAL DRUGS • If you get sick with flu, antiviral drugs can be used to treat your illness. • Antiviral drugs are different from antibiotics. They are prescription meds (pills, liquid or an inhaled powder) and are not available over - the - counter. • Antiviral drugs can make illness milder and shorten the time you are sick. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For people with high risk factors, treatment with an antiviral drug can mean the difference between having a milder illness versus a very serious illness that could result in a hospital stay. • CDC recommends prompt treatment for people who have influenza infection or suspected influenza infection and who are at high risk of serious flu complications. • Studies show that flu antiviral drugs work best for treatment when they are started within two days of getting sick, but starting them later can still be helpful, especially if the sick person has a high risk factor or is very sick from the flu. Labette Health was named one of Kansas’ “Best of the Best in Point - of - Care/Metabolic and Genetic Newborn Screening” in 2019. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in partnership with the Kansas Hospital Association and the Kansas Midwives Alliance, has created a recognition program for hospitals, facilities and midwives who provide newborn screening services. The first - ever awards were re- leased on July 31 by KDHE’s Kansas Newborn Screening Pro- gram (KS - NBS), honoring 131 birthing facilities and midwives for their dedication to higher newborn screening standards in 2019. “It’s an honor to be recognized by Kansas Department of Health and Environment,” said Janet Cruse, Laboratory Direc- tor. “We put forth every effort to make sure each baby born at Labette Health receives lifesaving newborn screening ser- vices in a timely manner.” Birthing facilities and newborn providers can earn top honors in up to five general categories by meeting or exceeding state goals or performing better than the state average. Facilities earning all recognitions for either point - of - care (hearing and critical congenital heart defects) or metabolic and genetic screenings earn a “Best of the Best” designation. The KS - NBS Program began in 1965 and currently screens newborns for 32 rare and serious medical conditions. In re- sponse to a 2018 recommendation from the KS - NBS Advisory Committee, the program began planning to add four new conditions to Kansas’ newborn screening panel. In prepara- tion, the program updated quality and timeliness expecta- tions. Over the last two years, Labette Health has worked dili- gently to retrain its staff, update protocols and adjust to high- er newborn screening standards. “Labette Health’s Obstetrics Department has a great working relationship with our Lab Department while insuring that the screening is completed efficiently,” said Sharon Roberts, RN, OB Director. “This recognition would not be possible without the collaborative efforts between OB and Lab.” The recognition publication is available on KS - NBS’s website, www.kdheks.gov/newborn_screening.
